HIKERS’ MASS
One of the
lessons learned from the early Christians is that one can celebrate the gifts of
God anywhere, any time. We are fortunate to be located in scenic Morris County,
tucked amongst the rolling hills, in view of splendid flora and fauna. At St.
David’s, we utilize many venues for this, including the Hikers’
Mass. Twice a year, in April and October, we gather for a hike in a nearby
locale and celebrate an outdoor Eucharistic Mass amongst nature.
Young and old, strollers as well as scramblers, participate in this very popular
event on hiking trails selected to allow for as many participants as possible.
Guests are always welcome and
the group
always includes children and pets. The trails we have hiked include ones in
Mahlon Dickenson County Park (Jefferson Township), Split Rock Reservoir
(Boonton), Mount Defiance (Ringwood State Park) and Mou ntainside
Park (Pequannock). The trails are scouted before hand with the express purpose
of assuring ourselves that the terrain will be suitable for the group.
A scenic locale is always chosen for celebration of the mass itself. One feels
ever closer to God and to each other during these celebrations, whether they
take place on an overlook or nestled within a forest.

These celebrations are culminated with a pot luck supper and evening of
fellowship to close out the day. The good people of St. David’s always have
sufficient delicious food for all! A different theme is chosen for each of these
suppers. In the past we have held square dances, Oktoberfest celebrations,
Harvest Festivals and Spring Flings. |
